ARTS VOLUNTEERS

The Arts Society Southampton supports community arts in different ways through grants and donations:

· Since 2023 the Society has run an annual competition for GCSE art students at Thornden School, Chandler’s Ford, in collaboration with the school’s Art Department. Three students, whose work is voted the most popular by members and visitors at our May lectures, are each awarded vouchers worth £75.00 at the June AGM. (See sections news and gallery for more information and images.)

· In 2024 the Society donated £100 to Wessex Sculptures to support an Iranian nurse granted asylum on a lino-cut course. This was as a result of a direct request from a member of the Society.

· Drama Grants: The Arts Society Southampton successfully nominated Blue Apple Theatre company for a £300 drama grant donated by Hampshire and Isle and Wight Area Arts Society. The Hampshire-based theatre group runs performances by people who have a learning disability. The grant went towards tee shirts emblazoned with the group’s logo.

· Our society matched the Area donation with £150.00 grants to two drama groups as suggested by members/visitors: The Geriactors and, at the other end of the age scale, Southampton-based Gantry Youth Theatre were the other recipients.

Southampton City Art Gallery has been the recipient of our donations and support in recent years:

· £250 towards a new frame for a Phillips de Koninck painting.

· £200 donated from the proceeds of a members’ visit to the gallery

· £500 which was matched by the Arts Society nationally, went towards a new frame for the Mark Gertler painting A Rabbi and his Grandchild (1913).

Latest news!

· £500 donated by the AS Southampton and £1000 by the Arts Society nationally has been promised towards the costs of a catalogue to accompany an exhibition opening in October 2026 Art Then! Art 1910-1960

We would like to continue supporting community arts projects whatever the form: music, murals, workshops, pottery, archive work - in schools, hospitals, prisons, voluntary groups - and welcome suggestions. We are also looking for a committee member who might be interested in leading on this. Please email us at info@theartssocietysouthampton.org.uk
